Many former WASPs encountered difficulties integrating into society after the organization and conclusion of World War II. Cochran opposed the idea of hiring women as pilots for the new military and even testified against it in Congress on the grounds that women shouldn't be given combat-related responsibilities during times of peace. The WASPs' request for full veteran status was unsuccessful in Congress until 1977. Senator Barry Goldwater, who had served with the WASPs in the Air Transport Command that year, compelled hearings on the WASPs' predicament.
He started adding WASP recognition to every piece of legislation he could because recognition bills were languishing. The WASPs were finally given veteran status on November 23, 1977, when President Carter signed H.R. 8701 into law.
