The Onondaga, Oneida, and Cayuga Indigenous nations were all situated within the ancient borders of what is now Upstate New York, but the Oneida were the only one to remain neutral during the American Revolution.
The Oneida, on the other hand, supported the Patriot forces and gave them military support in the form of soldiers, supplies, and intelligence. The Cayuga Nation joined the Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk Nations to form the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse) Confederacy in the 12th century in an effort to put an end to inter-tribal violence and establish a lasting peace on the continent. Many contemporary constitutions were affected by this form of governance and its constitution.
